In the Sweet Ground

There we were in the kitchen
You said, "I don't have words for you now,
Give me time, don't know how
But I'll have them soon."
Did you see through the doorway?
We were running like wolves through the night,
In our teeth shone the light
Of the moon.
And I've never been forgotten,
And I don't care to think that I might be,
When I'm cold, quiet and gently rotting
In the sweet ground.
You know what it's like to be someone
Waiting, with you hands on your mouth
As you grandmother's house
Is burning and burning.
She says something I can't quite hear.
Something 'bout the ways of the wind
And the cost of her sins
And the depth of her yearning.
And I've never been forgotten
And I don't really think that I will be
When I'm cold, quiet and gently rotting
In the sweet ground.

I'm lost in the wayback where they found Brian's body;
Where Alanna was pulled from the ice by her brother.
Where boys die from jumping too far and then breaking
Their bones, their hearts, their mother's lives.
And I'm so full of sorrow, and patience, and terror -
It just hurts so much brighter from here.
But I've walked through valleys with you and the horses,
Where Moses struck stone with his staff to find water,
Where bolder men choke on their own desires
And never know what it means to be free.
But you are a beacon, an ember, a teacher,
And there's something of you in my eyes.
I can take off my clothing to swim in the water.
The cold burns my body, I'm holding my daughter.
She's shaking and growing so tall in the summer,
We swim in the morning shade.
How will we survive these turbulent times?
I'm wild beyond my years.
I'm lost in the wayback where Brian went searching,
Where the earth gave way and the snow fell like thunder,
Where boys are still jumping with courage and abandon,
And they know what it means to be free.
I'm so full of wonder, and patience, and terror -
It hurts so much brighter from here.

400 ways to tie one thing to another
got the urge to climb anything at any cost:
a hill, that tree, your body
3000 miles away from you hometown
you can take the girl out of the west coast
but you can't take it out of the girl
mud caked on your boots and blood under your fingernails
ain't nothing going to save your soul tonight
find a bit of shelter, start a decent fire
and pray to your angry gods for a little light
you got 24 reasons not to get the hell out of dodge
you could live in fear of the sunlight or you could
stand on the corner with your thumb out
'cause I got one enormous feeling in the marrow of my bones
we're all going to end up dancing
all night long
mud caked on your boots and blood under your fingernails
ain't nothing going to save your soul tonight
find a bit of shelter, start a decent fire
and pray to your angry gods for a little light
